Install the StepCast extension
The extension is the recorder: while you click through a task, it takes a screenshot of each step in the tab you are recording, and nothing else. It works in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on a computer.
-
Unzip the download
Open your Downloads folder and unzip
stepcast-extension.zip. On Windows, right-click it and choose Extract All. On a Mac, double-click it. You get a folder calledstepcast-extension.Move that folder somewhere you will keep it, such as Documents. The browser loads the extension from this folder, so deleting it removes the extension.
-
Open the extensions page
Copy this address into a new tab and press Enter:
In Microsoft Edge the address is
edge://extensions. Browsers do not let websites open this page with a link. -
Turn on Developer mode
Switch on Developer mode: at the top right of the page in Chrome, or in the left column in Edge.
-
Load the folder
Click Load unpacked and choose the
stepcast-extensionfolder from step 1. The StepCast card appears in the list.Optional: click the puzzle-piece icon in the toolbar and pin StepCast, so its button is always visible.
-
Connect it to StepCast
Come back to StepCast, reload the page, and press Connect the extension. Choose OK when the browser asks. That's it: press New recording to record your first guide.
Updating the extension
When StepCast says a new version is available, download it again, unzip it, and replace the files in your stepcast-extension folder with the new ones. Then open the extensions page and click the reload arrow on the StepCast card.
Is it safe?
The extension only records the tab you start a recording in, and only while it is recording. It never stores what you type into password fields. Recordings go only to the StepCast site you connected it to. See the privacy policy.
